WELCOME, BER MONTHS 2026💫💥🧑‍🎄
We braved the rain, sampled delicious bar bites, drank and jammed at @takefive.hkg, which offered a cosy, private and relaxing atmosphere to welcome the BER months. This signals the beginning of the Filipino countdown - including a HK Thomasian countdown - to Christmas on Sept 1. We also distributed our special edition "founding members" t-shirts to our alumni members who signed up for the tees.

We're also happy to be joined by new faces, especially our non-alumni friends from other universities.

Thank you, Alysha, Jeniza, Mark, Sharlene, Thor, Kher, Stef, PRO of De La Salle University Alumni Association - One La Salle HK, for joining us, and of course to one of our alumni card partners in Hong Kong, Ms. Grace Chan and Mr. Marco Chan of @hotel101global.

About the weekend
We were delighted to be invited by the Philippine Consulate General of Hong Kong to "A Concert for Peace in Hong Kong" featuring the @philmadzsingers at @mplusmuseum on August 29.

The renowned ensemble took us around the world with their diverse repertoire from Europe to the Asia and all the way back to the Philippines. It was great to see familiar and new faces gather for the evening to support such a show of high calibre. Congratulations to all those who have put this together.

About the Philippine Madrigal Singers
The group was recognized in 2009 by the UNESCO as Artists for Peace for “putting fame and influence at the service of UNESCO’s ideals and efforts to promote cultural diversity, intercultural dialogue and a culture of peace”. Then in 2010, the Concorso Polifonico Guido d’ Arezzo Foundation honored the group with the Guidoneum Award by for “their artistic and choral promotion activity”. In July 2012, the group became the first choir in the world to receive The BrandLaureate Premier Award from the Asia Pacific Brands Foundation, in recognition for its “significant contribution to the world of choral music, producing new compositions and choral settings for Philippine, Asian and International songs, spreading the beauty of this genre and giving a good musical experience to the audience.”

The final send off
Today, July 19, 2026, USTAAHK joined a huge crowd that streamed into a packed memorial Mass for Dr. Mike Manio held at the Philippine Consulate. Dok, you made us so proud when the room broke into thunderous applause after everyone heard you went to UST and became one proud Thomasian, having obtaining your Master in Health Professions Education (UST Cum Laude 2008) there. We were so moved to tears.

It was truly an honour to have had you join us whenever you could, was always punctual at our meetings, and having had your incredible support for our infant alumni association that you became a bona fide founding member, and prioritised our health in your agenda as our first Health and Wellness Committee Chairperson. Thank you for never backing down from a challenge. We had big plans, but God had the biggest plan. We will forever cherish the time we had on earth and will strive to uphold the Thomasian values that brought us together: competence, commitment and compassion...and may we add: community. 🤍

🔊 EVENT CANCELLATION ANNOUNCEMENT
Following the sudden passing of Dr. Michael Manio, chairperson of USTAAHK's Health and Wellness Committee, we have decided to cancel our upcoming Linggo ng Musikang Pilipino event, which was supposed to have taken place on July 31, to pay our respects to Dok Mike and extend support to his family and the community who appreciated him dearly. USTAAHK’s tribute and statement on the passing of Dr.Michael Manio, beloved alumni and friend.

In celebration of Linggo ng Musikang Pilipino (Philippine Music Week) during the last week of July, the University of Santo Tomas Alumni Association Hong Kong is organising a two-part event on July 31 (Friday), 7:30pm, at Dara (Sai Ying Pun).

The event will kick off with the screening of “On the Record: An instrumental Hong Kong Music documentary” a film by journalist Jan Yumul and USTAAHK’s founding president. The short documentary uncovers the untold, centuries-old stories of Filipino musicians’ arrival in Hong Kong post-wars through the recollections of 1960s Hong Kong stars Danny Diaz, Christine Samson and siblings Ernesto, and Aurora Corpus.

Following the 20-minute screening will be an open-mic karaoke session for alumni and friends to reminisce and enjoy the night a way.

Tickets cost $250 per person, inclusive of food and 1 drink. Please RSVP by July 29. LIMITED SLOTS ONLY. We look forward to seeing you there!
